The Alchemy of Place; Where Ley Lines and Astrocartograpy intersect…

You’ve heard the phrase ‘As above, so below’… but what does that mean when we’re talking about ley lines and locational astrology? Leylines are powerful energy, and so are your personal locational lines. So what happens when the two meet?

Locational astrology—or astrocartography—is the astrology of place. It projects your natal birth chart onto the Earth, revealing where each planetary energy is strongest geographically. Imagine your Sun line—the line of vitality, purpose, and identity—running through a place on the planet. Or your Venus line, amplifying love, connection, and creativity. These are real lines you can physically travel to.

Here’s where it gets fascinating. In 2023, I travelled across southern England, tracing two powerful Earth energy currents known as the Michael and Mary lines. These lines crisscross the land, weaving through sacred sites and ancient churches. As I followed the Michael and Mary lines, I stood at a spot where they intersected with my Sun line—my line of personal radiance.

I felt it. It was intense.

It made me wonder – What happens when the energies of the Earth align with the cosmic blueprint of your birth

Ley lines are invisible pathways of Earth energy believed to connect ancient monuments and sacred sites. The term was popularized in the 20th century, but the idea is much older. Two of the most famous are the Michael and Mary lines, identified by dowsers Hamish Miller and Paul Broadhurst in The Sun and the Serpent. These lines stretch across southern England—from St. Michael’s Mount in Cornwall to East Anglia—crossing some of the most spiritually significant locations in the country.

Ley lines are believed to be invisible pathways of earth energy—natural currents that flow beneath the surface of the land. Some compare them to the meridians in acupuncture or the nadis in yoga channels of subtle energy that support the health and vitality of the planet itself. The term ‘ley line’ was first popularized in the 1920s by Alfred Watkins, who noticed that ancient sites—stone circles, burial mounds, churches—often lined up across the landscape. But it wasn’t until much later that dowsers like Hamish Miller and Paul Broadhurst revealed something even more compelling; certain ley lines don’t just form straight tracks… they weave, they pulse, they dance—like serpents of energy.

Though the Michael and Mary lines are two of the most well-known ley lines, these lines are found all over the world! And, people who visit or live along them often report heightened intuition, emotional breakthroughs, spiritual awakenings, or simply a deep sense of presence. When these earth energy lines cross or converge, it’s believed that a vortex or power node is formed. These are places where things can open, shift, connect and heal… both within us and around us.

Just to be clear, ley lines are earth energy lines, but earth energy lines are not necessarily ley lines. Rory Duff explains that ley lines are simply the long and weaving energy lines where sacred sites have been built, and connect in a straight line. But there does not need to be a sacred site, a stone circle or a church, for there to be powerful energy lines.

One of the sites I visited in 2023 was the town of Lostwithiel, which is nestled in a wooded valley in Cornwall. Its name comes from Cornish, meaning ‘the tail end of the woods.’ But I jokingly call it ‘Lost With All’—because I truly did lose some things there, and yet I found something deeper in the process.

Technically, the Michael and Mary lines cross at the Church of Saint Bartholomew. But I want to share two connected locations in this area that sit right on my Sun/IC line: the church itself, and Restormel Castle.”

First, Saint Bartholomew’s Church – Though the main entrance to the church is now at the back through a parking lot, we first approached the original front. There, we found a strange structure—shaped like a sarcophagus or a mummy. Of course, we couldn’t resist jumping in! It was strange and we wondered if it had been built there to take advantage of the crossing Mary and Michael Lines. We had a sneaking suspicion the energy lines may have crossed there, too, but without dowsing rods, we couldn’t confirm it. Still, we felt something. We decided it best to connect with both points

After a while, we made our way to the back entrance. Inside the church, we were drawn straight to the font—the place where the Michael and Mary lines are said to cross. Five of us stood around the font and connected with the energy. Curious as ever, we lifted the lid. Inside, we noticed a small arrow, and used the compass app on our phones to see where it pointed. It read 240° southwest. Interestingly, that compass reading—240° southwest—corresponds to the azimuth of a major lunar standstill moonset, especially at the latitude of Lostwithiel (around 50°N). And guess what? We’re in a year of major lunar standstill right now—2025.

I’ve included insights like this in the upcoming Clan Mother Worldwide Astro Travel Guide to Sacred Sites, where I show what astrology connects to each site, and when to visit. Go to my site to get notified when the book is available. Or, if you’re reading this later, you can find out where to purchase it.

Shortly after, a gentleman came over to explain the church and the Font. Watch the video!

To understand what might be happening at these intersections, let’s try to connect these powerful energies to what I experienced. I mentioned my Sun line ran through this area. In fact it is my Sun/IC line. The Sun/IC line in locational astrology (astrocartography) is a powerful and deeply personal line. It represents the meeting point of the Sun—your core identity, vitality, purpose—and the Imum Coeli (IC)—the root of your chart, symbolizes home, family, ancestral lineage, emotional foundations, and private life. The Sun/IC line is where your sense of self and your inner foundations converge. Travelling or living on this line often brings profound inner experiences. It can feel like coming home to yourself, like reuniting with something ancient and familiar. On this line, you may feel more connected to your roots or lineage. You may also find deep solitude, reflection or healing. And you may also encounter ancestral energies or spiritual guides. Your Sun (ego-identity) feels grounded (IC) here.

This line can also bring up unresolved inner patterns for healing, especially those related to your early life or family system. I am certain this is what happened to me. A mix of ancestral energy and my vitality was affected!

After the Church, just ten minutes away, we visited Restormel Castle—a near-perfect Norman ring fort. I lay in the center of its circular walls, and something happened. I couldn’t get up. My body felt seized. Remember: both the church and the castle sit on my Sun/IC line. Was this Earth energy? Was it a healing crisis? Was it a blending of the Michael and Mary currents with my own astrological Sun line? I couldn’t fully explore the castle. I was in too much pain. I couldn’t climb the castle stairs, so I lay on a bench outside the castle, stretching and breathing. My vitality (Sun) was majorly affected. After feeling a bit better, I then walked the perimeter of the castle and found myself moving energy with my hands. It felt like I was clearing something, like cutting through an energetic resistance. I called upon the spirits and elementals for support. The strange thing is that after we left, that intense pain was gone. Something had shifted!

According to geobiologist Rory Duff, ley lines aren’t just pathways—they’re resonant fields that amplify human characteristics where they cross. If you’re joyful, you become more joyful. If you’re struggling, those feelings may deepen. These are amplification zones.

So what happens when a ley line intersects a planetary line from your natal chart, like my Sun line? I think you come into a powerful field of cosmic and earthly resonance: as above, so below.

There are many things to consider when working with Leylines and your locational lines. I may have been on a line that disrupts health – Rory Duff calls these moon phase lines. And you also have to consider the aspects of the planet in question. I did have some strange things happen there-there is an astrological reason for that…. but I’ll leave that for a future post!

This is just the beginning of what we can discover when we walk the lines—both visible and invisible. If you’ve ever felt pulled to a place, or energized when you arrive somewhere you’ve never been… maybe it’s not just coincidence. Maybe, like me, you’re being called to stand where your star path meets the Earth.
