I sat down to write a New Moon post on the weekend, but before I wrote, I thought I would cast some coins for a New Moon iching reflection. I got hexagram 52 – Keep Still. That resonated with me. The New Moon was conjunct my Ceres, asking me to consider how I nourish and take care of myself. But even though this message resonated with me, I ignored it. I gathered up all of my stuff to sit down to write the New Moon post. As I sat down, a pencil turned around and stabbed me in the leg. The strange thing is that it didn’t really hurt, but it looked awful. The pencil stood straight up out of my leg… sorry if you are squeamish! I sat there for a moment looking at it in horror, and I realized it was giving me a message. I decided to heed the message and put down my computer! So no New Moon post!
The iching hexagram had a changing line that said, “If you find yourself being led by someone down a misguided path, leave them to their fate, or you may well become lost along with them. When the road leads nowhere, slow down to a standstill. In a case like this, stopping to sit by the side of the road brings good fortune.” This reminded me of a very powerful experience I had hiking by myself in France. I had packed up for a day hike from Rennes-le-Bain to Rennes-le-Chateau. It was an intentional hike. I started at the Throne of Isis (also called the Devil’s Seat – a name I don’t care for), and I set an intention to understand the pentagram laid out in the landscape1 . I also wanted to know its lessons for me. I’ve talked before about processing my anger on the way to Rennes-le-Chateau. They were lessons hugely connected with Mars, the masculine side of myself and how well I have healthily integrated the masculine and anger. The way back, however, was about panic and fear! I gave myself three hours before sunset to hike back the 3km – plenty of time. Google Maps on my phone gave a handy map for the hiking path, but in the middle of my hike, my phone battery drained, and as I reached for my extra battery pack to recharge it, I realized that I had forgotten to bring the cord. My phone eventually died in the middle of the mountains. Needless to say, I got lost
Suddenly, I stopped and sat down.
I called in everyone: God, Protectors, Angels, Guides. Then I heard a voice in my head, “Look up”. I looked up and saw Mount Bugerach. I was elated! From there, I found my way back toward Rennes-les-Chateau, swallowed my pride and knocked on a door that looked welcoming and asked if they could call me a taxi. In the middle of nowhere, I got a taxi, and for an added feeling of safety, my guides sent me a lady taxi driver!
Mars is not just about our drive, our energy, our masculine side; it’s also fear and panic. In fact, Mars has two moons, Phobos and Deimos (named after the Greek gods of fear and panic). As Mars transits, Phobos and Deimos are not too far away. The lesson was about facing fear and panic, listening to the information it was trying to give and finding trust and courage in the midst of it.
It could have gone really badly if I let myself give in. Panic and fear can snowball, and it can drive you to make bad decisions… but they are important energies that are there to help you if you face them. The Taurus New Moon was square to Mars and Pluto… two harsh and scary energies, one connected to fear and panic and the other, death darkness and the underworld. The energy lingers this week. Take time to sit by the side of the road!
